Shall My Brother Be?

Shall my brother be my enemy?
I pray it need not be!
May we see our own fault,
Christ exalt,
In real humility.
May we bear each other’s burdens,
May we share our heavy loads;
Lend our tears,
When with bent ears,
One pours out his sorrows and his woes.

Shall my brother be my enemy?
I pray I lend my arm
To lift his arm in battles,
And to keep him standing strong.
When weariness of strife sets in,
When enemies tug at his will
And his heart is swayed by temptation and sin,
May our life in Christ compel
My presence and my love…
Admonition if need be;
May we sharpen each other
As whetstone and iron
To live in faithfulness and purity.
