Long-range goals
Are set aside
When something closer
Catches our eyes.

Sacrifice the piggy bank
To get a little treat,
Quickly to be eaten up,
And yet the other needs
Remain.

Sacrifice the kitty
To satisfy the flesh…
Gone too soon, the temporal;
More distant goals are still unmet.
Alas!

Eyes on the temporary,
Though the temporary fades,
Sometimes indulgence in these things
Is better spent in other ways.
